Our innovation proposal centres on the expansion and enhancement of a STEM program we are in the process of starting at John Oliver Secondary in Vancouver. We currently offer a grade 9 STEM program where a cohort of 27 students are combining their math and science courses with two technology education classes. The program includes three teachers across three content areas who are working collaboratively to design and implement the program.
Due to a growing demand among our school’s student population we are expanding the STEM program to include more grades. We are designing curriculum using the new standards to provide individualized hands-on experiences that will enhance the student’s math, science, tool and problem-solving skills.
As we continue to grow we are creating partnerships with local universities and colleges. This will ensure that the skills we are teaching our students in our program are helping them succeed in completing their post-secondary goals.
